ANDRZEJ STRUMIŁŁO (1927 — 2020)

An outstanding and versatile polish visual artist and poet. Author of paintings, drawings, photography, sculptures, book graphics, posters, art exhibitions, set designs.

Born in Vilnius he studied under Władysław Strzemiński at the State Higher School Of Fine Arts in Łódź. He graduated from the Faculty of Painting, the Academy of Fine Arts in Krakow (1950). He has travelled many times to Asia. In the years 1982-1984 he ran the Graphics Presentation Unit at the UN General Secretariat in New York. He taught painting and art history at several universities. His works have been extensively exhibited around the world. He has authored a number of original publications. Andrzej Strumiłło has been active in nature and cultural heritage conservation initiatives.

Among the multiple awards received by him are: the Knight’s Cross, Officer’s and Commander’s Cross of the Order of Polonia Restituta, the Gloria Artis Gold Medal and the titles of the Honorary Citizen of the City of Suwałki and the Ambassador of the Culture of Podlasie.

Since 1984 he lived and worked in Maćkowa Ruda, in the Suwałki region.
